Help and Support:
FAQS:
Why are you doing this?
If not now, when? There is no reason other than to make a real difference.
Why Sri Lanka?
Simply, we have to start somewhere and from a place of strength.
What makes Sri lanka most attractive for this project is:
They teach English in their school system, making it easier for you to communicate directly with them. Where English is less common, most teachers are capable.
Sri Lanka has a similar legal system in common law and is a constitutional democracy.
Education is a priority. We have a similar literacy rate.
Sri Lanka has a highly qualified work force especially in the high tech field.
There are established relationships between Canada and Sri Lanka, some that we are able to benefit from. What are some easy/simple ways for me to help?
Read up about Sri Lanka, or any affected area, and put it on your Things to Do Before I Die List. Its an enchanting country of safaris, ancient temples, jungles and cultures.
Go to a Sri Lankan restaurant or support a local Sri Lankan owned business. Sri Lankans send more money home than any other country per capita.
Buy Sri Lankan made products like Ceylon tea, souvenirs, and other exports.
Consider doing business with Sri Lanka.
Attend a Sri Lankan event or simply stay tune to events.
Donate $5 to our schools Friendship band Project and follow in its success on our site.
Teach your children they can make a difference.
I have already given to other causes. Why more?
Thank you for your kindness. Feel welcome to follow our projects as though you contributed in ours. Most other donors don't have the satisfaction of seeing where their contributions went.
"Why is There a Need to Give More?"
This was a very honest and intelligent question asked of me by a student when visiting her school. Simply put, imagine you giving a beggar money on a street: it will pay for what they need now, but it won't help them from needing more tomorrow. Most of what was given was given to good emergency relief organizations, whose job it is to provide for survivors immediate essential needs, temporary shelter, food, medicine. Agreed, excessive funds have gone for these purposes but it is unlikely that much will go to rebuilding families, jobs and communities, permanent houses, schools, churches, businesses or roads. Some contributions will never reach tsunami affected regions as they are now destined for the next disaster. Survivors need sustainable, long term support, and this is where most funding is not reaching and unfortunately this is where the real expense is. Sadly few governments deliver on their pledges also.
Can I send supplies other than money?
Yes but be careful and intelligent. Cash is far more mobile and fluid, and less expensive. See our earlier notes under Projects and our Database listings.
How can you avoid Sri Lanka's corruption?
We do so by knowing who our coordinating partners are and by dealing directly with dependable managers of our carefully selected projects. We stay small and think micro-level. We minimize our overheads, work only with volunteers to ensure all contributions go to the source.
How can I trust you?
Please read through our website.
Like any charity, we ask you to be vigilant and ask questions to satisfy all your concerns before giving. Check our references, the media coverage we have received to date and difference we are already making in Sri Lanka. Most of all watch our site for regular updates.
How will we know my money will make a difference?
$5 donation towards our Friendship Band Project provides almost a week of meals, a good sleep, schooling & medical support. But most of all, a place called home and hope for many homeless children. You can see how many lives we touch on our websites projects, where we update cash flow to each project.
Why are you working with schools?
The schools we choose are experienced community non profit schools that are run by volunteers to support children from families that have difficulty to support them financially. These schools supplement the very basic education most kids get at public schools.
Why are you nonreligious in your approach?
We wish only to remain impartial and to help all children and families, regardless of their background. We do work with operations that may have a religious links, but who have a long history of helping all underprivileged people, regardless of their cultural or religious background. We work with all non political respected pillars of the community in our chosen areas.
